My holidays involved a lot of DBZ marathoning. 📺
When you catch up with good pals you haven't seen in years that's always given.
And let me tell you, it doesn't take much to get me inspired to draw a few of the key characters from this classic anime. Dragon Ball Z is to thank for all my early anatomy knowledge after all. I remember pausing the show on the TV screen as a kid, off of an old VHS tape I'd recorded over a dozen times, and filling up a big scrap book full of characters from the series.
If my memory serves me correctly, I even attempted to make some of my own characters up from the Z universe.
I couldn't wait to get home and start drawing a new series of comic book illustrations based on the Dragon Ball Z characters - Starting with Goku, the star saiyan of the show.
The challenge was capturing Goku's likeness and aesthetic in my style. Luckily, I feel like I managed to do that... the other big hurtle was all those clothing folds. I was a bit out of practice after such a long break away from the drawing board so it took me a bit to find my groove with the rendering of Goku's iconic duds. First attempt was tough, second time around though, I was nailing it.
It's good to be challenged. Never be discourage when you're faced with an obstacle in your drawing. This is an opportunity to learn, or to polish up on something you already know. Either way, it's going to make you better.
I've recorded the entire process for this piece, so once I get the narration done on it, I'll get it published and sent off to you. The best way to make sure you don't miss out on the vid is to go to www.howtodrawcomics.net and subscribe to my mailing list. I'll be sending out a link to the video as soon as it's uploaded.
Next up I'm going to give Goku some color which will be fun!
Hope you like the pic - fellow DBZ fans, let me know what you think in the comments below. Really wanted to do this character justice.
