I’ve come bearing a new Comic Art Deconstruction for you - featuring OC, Mecharna! She’s actually based on an older concept I created, of an android who possesses the ability to control massive mechs with her cybernetic mind powers!

What’s special about the creation of this sci-fi chickadee is that I decided to switch things up and take a more painterly approach to my coloring method… as opposed to the classic airbrush look I’d gone for previously.

You can never be sure how things are going to wind up when you venture into new territory. Truth be told, I’m still on the fence about the overall aesthetic.

At the time, I was in a faze where optimizing my workflow was key to ramping up the speed of my production time. And this coloring method was a lot easier and faster than the previous one.

The only question was did it look as good?

But as with any fresh tactic, you’ve got to break it in through repetition, testing and adjustment.

Continuously looking for ways to improve my process over the last few years has been of great benefit - allowing me to refine my process and thus get things done in a fraction of the time it used to take.

That makes me thankful for challenging myself to step it up, and continuously find new ways to grow as an artist.

I’d encourage you to do the same.

No matter how good you are, if you’re NOT evolving a little more every day, you’re gonna become stagnant. Keep moving, keep challenging yourself – your art is a living thing that needs to be fed in order to grow.

It doesn’t always feel very comfortable at first. Venturing into new territory always takes some getting used to, so you gotta be brave enough to pull through. You’ll look back on your art a year from now and be thankful you did!

I hope you get some value out of the 6 step break down I’ve created for you here – if you find it useful, share it with your friends.

Until next time, keep on creating!

-Clayton
